_____

ABOUT THE THEME- "Community"

A community is a reflection of what we crave: belonging.

Belonging is the heart of human connection. Our hardwiring is to be social creatures, to need one another. We cannot become our best selves without feeling like we belong to a tribe that sees us, respects us, and lifts us up.

A sense of belonging can be fostered in many ways: food, music, volunteering, a cause. You can scan a room and see a diversity of backgrounds, ages, and skill sets—yet the common thread is shared desires and aspirations. It's magnificently profound how simple this connection is, how deeply we all crave it, and how it changes the trajectory of our lives.

The work of community is when a person walks into a room with fear and self-doubt, only to leave with a new narrative and a feeling of possibility and hope.

We can give that experience to one another. It's the work of being human.

This month's global exploration of Community was chosen by our Philadelphia chapter and illustrated by James Olstein.
_____

ABOUT THE SPEAKER- Marshall Shorts

Marshall—a Cleveland native and a proud husband and father—is an award winning entrepreneur, artist, designer and organizer with a passion for creativity. With over 10 years of experience in the field of design. His creative passion is only rivaled by his commitment to being an agent of change for his community.

He is Founder of Artfluential, a boutique branding and design agency, and co-founder of Creative Control Fest which is a conference that centers Black creatives who participate or aspire to be a part of the ever growing creative class.

In 2014 Marshall won the Increase CDC small business award in the communications category and co-authored his first book— From This Moment On...Personal Reminders for Success At Work, At Play, and In the Shower. In 2016 he gave his first TEDx Columbus talk, which was recognized by the National TEDx organization. 2017 was another year of milestones as Marshall was the recipient of the CCAD Alumni Award and Greater Columbus Arts Council, Emerging Arts Leader Award.

–––––

ABOUT THE TALK

Sticks in a bundle are unbreakable.

Building creative communities is building community. The ultimate measure of a community is not in times of comfort and convenience, but where the community stands in times of challenge and controversy.

"Building a Data Science Group - Is there a right way?

Building a Data Science Group - Is there a right way? Perspectives from a Data Scientist/Astro-nerd w/ Kelly Denney, Principal Data Scientist at Illumination Works.

Data science and the tools and applications landscape to support it in industry today are daunting. What types of skills should one look for in a data scientist? What skills might differentiate a data scientist from an expert BI analyst or a rockstar software engineer? How many data scientists does your company need to support your business use cases? What type of working environment is best to maximize your data science return?

Kelly Denney is a Principal Data Scientist at Illumination Works, LLC, a solution enablement company that offers consulting services and project support for all things data. She recently presented on this topic at the Women in Analytics conference, but would like to continue the conversation. She doesn't have all the answers but will present her perspective on these questions and lead a discussion with the goal of all attendees leaving with a little more insight into the key factors to consider when building a data science group.

Come to learn and to contribute to this open discussion, and enjoy some drinks, snacks, and good company while you're there.

A big thanks to Illumination Works and HiQo Solutions for sponsoring the event and Hopewell for letting us hang out in their space!

RSVP's aren't mandatory but it helps everyone plan. Click here to tell us you'll be there.

Conscious Capitalism Central Ohio Happy Hour

RSVP REQUIRED: GET YOUR TICKET HERE!

Conscious Capitalism Central Ohio is our local branch of the international movement. We are dedicated to cultivating the theory and practice of Conscious Capitalism and supporting the local community by serving as a resource on your journey to becoming a more conscious business.

Conscious Capitalism is a way of thinking about capitalism and business that better reflects where we are in the human journey, the state of our world today, and the innate potential of business to make a positive impact on the world. Conscious businesses are galvanized by higher purposes that serve, align, and integrate the interests of all their major stakeholders.

    We will share:

    • Details on our chapter goals for the year
    • Information about how to get involved in the chapter in 2018
    • An overview of our events for the next four months
    • Details of the Conscious Capitalism International Conference in Dallas in April
    • A short presentation on how Facebook and BlackRock (one of the world's largest invest firms) are moving towards the principles of Conscious Capitalism

Following this short program, we will host a Q&A with the founding board of the Central Ohio Chapter to answer questions related to your business or about the chapter and movement.

This is a great opportunity to meet with business owners and individuals who share the belief that meaningful, conscious businesses can transform lives and communities as well as the bottom line.

Join us for drinks, light bites, snacks and lively conversation at our first event of the year!
